Abstract

In the period extending from September 1919 to the end of the year 1920 several French travellers made it to Fiume so as to observe the political experiment Gabriele d’Annunzio was conducting there. Most of them were correspondents for conservative newspapers or reviews, veterans or men of letters. All were fascinated by how much power the poet dictator wielded over the masses and were won over by the declarations of friendship for France he made in the name of Latinity. They pointed out though that his policy was tentative and that he had difficulty reconciling the conflicting political views of his associates, which made it difficult to get support from the population for his project.
