Abstract
Umberto Eco contributed substantially and most valuably to semiotic thinking and to the academic and public life of the discipline by his teaching and his writing. His “Lector in Fabulaµ may impress by its technicality, but the book unfortunately presents three major weaknesses according to the author of this paper, namely treating the reader as an observer of a textual object and not the addressee of the voice of the text; not grasping what a narrative world is; and not recognizing the semantic function of the absurd in the “Very Parisian Dramaµ.
