Abstract
The history of Italian legislation on the decommissioning of military real estate began in the mid-1980s and continued throughout the 1990s in a context of persisting state financial problems. The article reconstructs the history of the re-use of Italian former military sites. It delineates the heterogeneous and complex legislative framework on which the process of re-use and the most recent legislation are based. It reconstructs the difficulties that characterize the programmes promoted by the Italian State and the relative procedures, doing so also through case studies.
