Abstract

This essay describes the evolution of Giuseppe Antonio Borgese’s reading of Proust. After having met him in person in 1917, the Sicilian literary critic developed a negative interpretation of his work as a late epitome of decadent art. However, in the 1930s, Borgese reconsidered his opinion, stating that In Search of Lost Time was in fact a great masterpiece he had not been able to comprehend before. Nevertheless, his sincere apology was manipulated by fascist censorship, altering the entire reception of his reading.
