Abstract
The paper explores the presence of gymnastics and sport in the work of several XXth century Italian writers starting from the novels of De Amicis. It focuses particularly on boxing, cycling and soccer, the most popular sports. The essay highlights the relationship between sport and society as well as between sport and politics. It analyzes how economic transformations affect people’s behaviour, the way they play and watch sports. Sports competitiveness is the key to modernity in every cultural field.
