Abstract

The Tripartite Declaration on Multinational Enterprises, adopted by the ILO Governing Body in November 1977 and last updated in 2006, was reviewed in March 2017. This paper first analyses its main recommendations and its follow-up mechanisms. Second, it illustrates the most important developments occurred inside and outside of ILO which triggered its last review. After having analysed the main amendments, the paper will then highlight why the Declaration seems to be not (totally) consistent with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, that is, the global reference point for companies on how to 'know and show' that they respect also labour rights.
