Abstract

The issue of Benedetto Croce's devaluation of sciences reflects a misunderstanding that is yet to be overcome in Italian culture. By retracing Croce's main pages on science, and in particular those contained in "Logic as the Science of the Pure Concept" ("Logica come scienza del concetto puro"), the paper tries to illustrate that Croce's criticism is aimed at a specific type of science, i.e. the "classic" one, and that, in the work of the Italian philosopher, there is a clear recognition of the cognitive role of sciences. This even allows us to consider Croce as being in line with the most advanced contemporary sciences and with the paradigm of complexity
