Abstract

Based on a study of sixteen 12th-century manuscripts of glossed Gospels of Matthew, this essay identifies two main families of pre-Glossa ordinaria versions of the Gloss on Matthew and traces modes of early dissemination. The history of these manuscripts reveals one of migrating students, masters, reforming monks and influential churchmen who valued these glossed copies of Matthew both for themselves and for their local communities. From their origin at Laon, these glosses spread and helped forge a transregional exegetical community of clerics, in different institutional environments, reading the Bible in a similar way
