Abstract

This paper discusses the dilemmas and problems arising from using ethnography to inform the design of information technology. The discussion is based on the two authors' ongoing field studies of police patrols and firefighters. Specific attention is paid to the dilemmas faced by the researcher in the field and on their consequences for the result of the design work.
