Abstract

This article explores the role of the body in commercial phone sex services. In this type of sex work, interaction between sex workers and customers is mediated by the telephone and the body seems to be absent. The trained use of the voice and of a competent «cultural narrative» by telephone operators is examined in detail to reveal how they manage to make the body «an absent presence» (Shilling 1993).
