Abstract

The standing point of this article is that the traditional concept of sovereignty is unable to explain our age so that it seems necessary to rethink the theoretical assumptions in which modern State is rooted. In the "Politica Methodice Digesta", starting from the concepts of "symbiosis" and "consociatio", Althusius develops a legal-political theory based on communication and mutual sharing among a plurality of government levels. The principles on which Althusius's theory is based offer an original point of view on legal and political relations and could be useful in order to image a new federal model alternative to modern State.
