Abstract
This text presents a fragment of the genealogy of emergency powers in western political theory. It tries to locate the under-studied chapter of Rousseau's Social Contract on dictatorship in the sequence that goes from Machiavelli to Carl Schmitt. The basic suggestion is that Rousseau disentangles the institution from the traditional structure of the mixed constitution (the Aristotelian memigmene politeia) making it available for modern democracy.
