Abstract

This paper aims to provide a selection of introductory remarks on Ludovico Antonio Muratori’s Thesaurus volumes annotated by Bartolomeo Borghesi, which were recently discovered in a private archive. It investigates Borghesi’s method of updating and amending the epigraphic heritage transmitted by the Thesaurus through the analysis of a series of selected exempla from this rich and unpublished manuscript documentation. From this initial approach, Theodor Mommsen’s debt to Borghesi’s research, as well as that of the Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum itself, has furthermore emerged.
