Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the apparitores’ recruitment systems, analyzing the sources in detail and comparing the various hypotheses formulated so far, and on the form of interaction of different systems, at urban, provincial, and municipal level. Some elements of the epigraphic habit that could shed light on the mechanism of election of the apparitores are also investigated, proposing to interpret the formula apparitor illius/illi and the nude dicti as apparitores delati directly by public offices.
