Abstract
The manuscript Boncompagni E 1 of the Vatican Apostolic Library is commonly considered the first nucleus of Pietro Bembo’s correspondence. The research currently underway demonstrates, however, that it was originally an anthology prepared for private use by Vittore Soranzo, a disciple of Bembo. The latter came into possession of the manuscript only later and used it to increase the number of letters in his correspondence intended for printed publication.
