Abstract

The paper provides an overview of non-literary sources that are useful for studying the language of the Aragonese chancery of Naples. The level of knowledge on this subject is still very limited. The paper reviews available studies and offers a historiographical reflection on the topic, extending it to the entire Kingdom. The term « chancery » is broadly defined, but the political-diplomatic component is given particular consideration. After clarifying the research objectives, the article gives the details necessary for a correct historical framing of the Aragonese period and of the sources studied. It then summarizes the state of the surviving documentation and ends by proposing a table of chancery written records divided into typologies.
