Abstract

This contribution offers an interpretation of Rime, 610, a sonnet by Torquato Tasso included in the 1593 Marchetti edition, explicitly dedicated to Laura Pigna but implicitly to her father, Giovan Battista. After a discussion on the occasion, identified by Solerti as Laura Pigna’s wedding in January 1570 (based on a letter from the Florentine ambassador Bernardo Canigiani), the essay explores a possible re-dating of the sonnet in the light of certain considerations involving the accompanying letter of the Considerazioni sopra tre canzoni di M. Gio. Battista Pigna intitolate ‘Le tre sorelle’ (letter no. 8 from the edition by Cesare Guasti), probably written in 1572. The analysis of the text takes into account Tasso’s representation of Pigna in the sonnet, in the Considerazioni, and in the Aminta (first performed in 1573), and aims to reflect on some aspects of the relationship between Pigna and Tasso.
