Abstract
This paper examines verse 73 from ‘Inferno’, xxxiii, focusing on lexicographic and historical-linguistic elements. In particular, the research is aimed to the verb ‘brancolare’, but also to the specific dimension of blindness, which contributes to define the term. Having defined the verb brancolare and Count Ugolino’s condition of blindness, which does not seem metaphorical but rather linked to the starvation he suffered, this contribution proposes to explain the meaning of Dante’s verse more accurately by using a diachronic perspective.
