Abstract
While the epic expressions ‘grande Atride’ and ‘alto Achille’ may seem like ancient formulae of Homeric diction, they are far from traditional, since they made their first appearance in ‘Rvf ’ 360. After Petrarch, they will become popular (above all, but not only) among translators of the ‘Iliad’, both in Latin poetry (from Poliziano onwards) and Italian (Foscolo, Monti) and in the main languages and literatures of Western culture.
