Abstract
The Italian legal and health care system provides for a specific administrative procedure whereby private entities, both for profit and non-profit, may be engaged in the provision of health care services, namely, accreditation (licensing). This procedure can be either competition-oriented or aimed at creating a list of a number of Third Sector Organisations with which public authorities may decide to co-operate to arrange innovative services or provisions. Against this legal background and in the light of some recent legal provisions, the article attempts to analyse the role of Third Sector Organisations in the provision of health care and social care services
