Abstract
The article traces the different definitions of just war that have been given in the course of Western thought, and provides a conceptual analysis of the main theoretical positions and the most important categorical transformations. Particular attention is paid to modern secularisation and the relationship between war and sovereignty, as well as the further regulation of warfare in the 20th century. It concludes by emphasising the inherent difficulty of completely tracing war back to law, given its existential character
