Civic and Citizenship Education. Proposals by the International Organizations
Abstract
In the globalization era, citizenship is strongly changing, and these changes inevitably affect the forms of civic and citizenship education. International organizations are gaining reliability and prestige as they produce policy-relevant knowledge, and their contributions are becoming ever more impactful on the governance of education. In this work, we analyze the proposals on civic and citizenship education by the Council of European Union, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, and OECD. Each of these organizations addresses themes and objectives for helping national governments in educating the citizens of the future. These four proposals outline an international framework that can help understand the structures and contents of Civic Education, as introduced in the Italian education system. They also provide helpful suggestions on how to design and evaluate this ‘new’ subject.
