Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the category of Quantity, as it is explained in the philosophy of Francisco Suárez, namely in his "Disputationes Metaphysicae" XL and XLI, as well as in "De Eucharistia" disputations. This inquiry is part of a wider project, whose aim is to understand the interpretation of the Eucharist during the years of the scientific Revolution. Since we assume that material Quantity is treated as far as it stands for Substance (differently from the thomistic tradition), our goal is to understand 1) in which terms and in which respect Suárez can develop its argument; 2) if the "revised" notion of Quantity may have influenced the interpretation of the sacrament; 3) which are the philosophical consequences of this emerging problem.
