Abstract

The Biographical Dictionary of Italian people presents an entry on Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri, the promotor in 1925 of both, the Enciclopedia italiana and the Dizionario biografico degli italiani more commonly known as Treccani’s Encyclopedy and Dictionary (Dizionario biografico degli italiani, v. 96, IEI, Roma 2019, pp. 627-640). The author of this article gave her contribution in composing the entry, exactly in the form which here appears. In so doing she wishes to thank the Dictionary’s redaction for a lot of details completing the already published entry, while she intends to take some other aspects into account. As a successful industrialist Treccani was a self-made man. As a Maecenas he gave Fascism his consent. As an entrepreneur of culture and industry modernizer he cultivated the illusion of an individual sense of responsibility and personal freedom of initiative. He wanted to choose proper words to define his style of work and life, that is apoliticism and indifferentism.
