Abstract

In the early modern period, intermediaries played a crucial role in the international distribution of books. Booksellers engaged colleagues to act as their representatives, for example at the international book fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig. Scholars, artists and diplomats were active in the book trade, while bankers, shippers and merchants took care of transport and financial matters. These various types of agency should be considered when we look at the traffic in books in early modern Europe.
