Abstract

This essay aims to investigate the relationships between ecclesiastical and secular authorities fromthe late Sixteenth century to the early Eighteenth century, in a circumscribed context of southern Italy, the diocese of Vieste. The paper also aims to analyse the attempts of the bishops to involve the court of theHolyOffice in issues that did not concern the defence of orthodoxy, but rather local contrasts. The study is based on the analysis of unpublished documents preserved in the Archive of the Curia of Vieste, the State Archives of Naples and the Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
