Abstract
The essay aims to focus on the taking of power by Louis XiV, through the reading of Savoy diplomatic dispatches. the analysed documents re-evaluate the role of the young king, traditionally depicted as profoundly shaped by the Fronde and bearing a debt of gratitude to Mazarin - as his protector down to 1653 and his teacher and guide thereafter. it suggests that a more ambiguous legacy conditioned much of Louis' behaviour after Mazarin's death.
