Abstract
This essay analyses the formation of the socio-professional identities of Italian and French engineers within their nation-states, while the latter were changing from a liberal political system to a mass democratic one. the essay highlights the differences in these two processes. the relationships between the professional group and the political system are analyzed with regard to the professionalization process, the associative networks and the educational system.
