Abstract

This survey considers Italian and international historiography about Cavour bringing out new political aspects of his role in the making of new Italy. The essay pays careful attention to the debates and controversies in the tradition of cavourian biography from the monumental work of Romeo to the recent books of Hearder and Cafagna. The problem is to characterize the nature and efficiency of cavourian liberalism between european and italian influences.
