Abstract
In 1896 the Kingdom of Hungary celebrated the millennium of its conquest of the Carpathian Basin with a grand fair, modelled after the universal exhibitions and held in Városliget Park. The event marked the peak of the Hungarian Boldog Békeidõk, meaning the economic development achieved by the Hungarian half of the Habsburg territories. However, the country was not without contradictions: social turmoil stemming from rapid industrialization and the issue of national minorities.
