Abstract

The paper presents a survey of the debates raised in Italy by Chaim Perelman's "Traité de l'argumentation". In Italy Perelman's theory has been mainly traced back to the contraposition between science and humanities, and has been used with antiscientific aims. At the same time, no serious analysis has been undertaken of the modes of argumentation which are the focus of Perelman's attention.
