Abstract

The year 1921 witnessed the opening of the Catholic University and the inauguration of courses and lectures in the Faculty of Philosophy. The present work intends to trace the development and the evolution of the philosophical school which sprang from programmes drafted in connection with the "Rivista di filosofia neo-scolastica". Drawing from unpublished documentation in the Archives of the Catholic University itself, it focuses on the presence of this institution on the philosophical scene, analysing methods and contents of syllabuses, following design patterns in the contributions of the teaching staff to the Italian philosophical debate, and hinting at publications promoted by this Faculty. This essay wishes to offer new elements for the evaluation of the antiidealistic controversy led on by teachers of this University, of their preoccupations about orthodoxy and of their privileged reference to doctrines of Medieval Scholasticism in connection with the study of modern and contemporary philosophy.
