Abstract

The proximity has been prescribed as a cure for all ills of democracy. This proximity requirement has increased with the possibilities of disintermediation offered by new communication technologies. This article describes the virtues of this approach, its limits and the need to justify this political distance that is configured by the institutions of representative democracy.
