Abstract
The Author discusses the volume edited by G. Duso, "Oltre la Democrazia" in the light of the present difficulties of democracy. According to the Author, the classical weberian distinction, of Tocquevillean origin, between social and political democracy, can still be of use in understanding our democracies. Such distinction should remain as a guiding light also for those political philosophies that propose to go "beyond democracy", in order to avoid the risk of moving from the present form of democratic government - not matter how exhausted - to a new-old form of despotism.
