Abstract

This article considers the current state of the art of the research on Hugo Grotius and discusses some open issues. Since the 1980s a number of relevant studies have provided new elements for a better understanding of Grotius’s theory, its sources and its theological, philosophical and legal foundations, while a more recent approach has focused on the early modern European expansion overseas and the struggles for global hegemony as an essential background of his work.
