Abstract
The essay examines how Giovanni Pascoli addresses the theme of mourning in four of his poetry collections (Myricae, Canti di Castelvecchio, Primi poemetti, Nuovi poemetti). Through an analysis of every instance of mourning and crying recorded in the four books and a close reading of the poemetto Italy, the essay aims to demonstrate that Pascoli’s approach to grieving aligns with Ernesto de Martino’s understanding of ritual lament as a stereotypical response to existential struggles. This perspective sheds new light on Pascoli’s stylistic choices and further highlights what distinguishes the four collections
