Abstract
The essay focuses on the typically modern motif of the loneliness of the powerful by analysing various examples from the end of the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. The motif is also set in the context of the widespread attention to loneliness in modern literature and in relation to the peculiar features of power in the modern age.
