Abstract
Four versions of the interface of a signal repetition system, used in Italian railways on some locomotives, were simulated and evaluated in a laboratory setting. The first version reproduced relevant features of the currently used interface. Two other versions included an innovative graphic design but maintained the original horizontal display of signals. The fourth version utilized the new design and a vertical display, compatible with the forward motion of the train. Experts performed a recognition task similar to the one drivers are normally involved in. Response times suggest that the vertical display is more usable.
