Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is having a tremendous impact on our society, so much so that even young children have access to digital content and services through interfaces that use AI methods and tools. The debate over the use and advancement of AI systems has become heated because of the possibility that human intelligence will be overwhelmed by artificial intelligence. As is often the case, a lack of knowledge about a particular phenomenon can create feelings of anxiety. It is essential to recognise the real risks of these new technologies and to distinguish them from those resulting from a lack of knowledge. Gerd Gigerenzer, in his book How to stay smart in a smart world: Why human intelligence still beats algorithms (2023), introduces some concepts that underlie the understanding of AI and allow the non-expert reader to get an accurate picture of its potential and the risks it can bring if it is endured and not used consciously
