Abstract
We present a new model which details six motivations underlying processes of identity formation, based on an expansion of Identity Process Theory (Breakwell, 1986, 1988). The model includes motives to maintain and enhance self-esteem, efficacy, continuity, distinctiveness, belonging and meaning. Using a new measurement technique (Vignoles, 2003), we examined the incidence of these six motivations on the construction of the actual self, providing empirical evidence which validates the model. Secondly, the new six-motive model was applied to the study of desired and feared possible selves (Markus & Nurius, 1986).
