Abstract
Language and music are human activities that require the processing of structured auditory sequences of complex sound signals. The physical and functional aspects of linguistic and musical stimuli present not only many similarities but also substantial differences, and require partially the same cognitive processes and neural substrates. In this review article, we discuss experimental studies investigating the overlap and the independence of musical and linguistic functions, and the effects of music training on cognitive functions involved in language processing and foreign language learning.
