Abstract

According to Francis Crick, "consciousness is the major unsolved problem in biology". In recent years, many theories have been advanced in an attempt to address this problem by means of an explanation of the relation between the brain and conscious experience. In this paper I argue that if we take the explanation of the relation between consciousness and the self as a central feature of any theory of human consciousness, then we should integrate the neurobiological approach to consciousness with psycho-social and cultural research.
