Abstract

The questions addressed in this paper focus on the changing conditions confronted by the philosophical sociologist, Kurt H. Wolff, during his twenty-five years as exile in Italy and the United States, with emphasis on his management of the distinctive situations he confronted in his scholarly life as exile. It is argued that at the end of this lengthy initial period, he gained recognition for himself and his work that obviated the more ordinary shifts imposed on the exile intellectual.
