Abstract

A recent book by the author, on work and welfare changes in Europe, is revisited to underline the rise of social policies meant to enforce the individual's empowerment. The purpose is to clarify a few points that led to some misunderstandings or wrong interpretations, as - for instance - the role assigned to voluntary action within the welfare system or the concept of individualization of society.
