Abstract
The Article firstly outlines the aims of supervision in the field of insurance, also highlighting how the public supervisory activity in this specific section of the financial system - as is happens with regard to banks and investment companies - has to deal with certain organizational models, which are not necessarily alternative. Then, the paper retraces the evolution of the Italian discipline, whose objective is to preserve insurance market stability, focusing on some noteworthy passages and inscribing them in the wider European transformation process. The reconstruction carried out aspires to trace out the specificities of supervision over insurance corporations that, as the Author observes and clarifies, is perfectly consistent with the peculiarities of the activity carried out by the supervised entities.
