Abstract
The essay is dedicated to Carlo Emilio Gadda’s military experience during World War I, which he narrated particularly in his diary written during his time as a war prisoner (Giornale di guerra e di prigionia). Gadda’s strong national sentiment coexists with his aspirations to an opening of Italy towards the better traditions of European civilization.
