Abstract
The Italian Constitutional Court was called to pronounce, for the first time, on the «assisted suicide», in a very particular case: the sentence n. 242/2019 was innovative both for the decision-making technique used and for the courage of the established legal principles. In the author’s opinion, this is an important sentence which, however, has been the subject of simplifying readings. The Constitutional Court, in fact, has not recognized a generic freedom of suicide and not even a generic right to die, but a principle of self-determination which is central in a democratic State.
