Abstract
The Danish burqa-affair contains a prohibition of wearing religious and political symbols in court as well as a re-interpretation of existing legislation in order to identify where within the limits of freedom of religion it is possible to make prohibitions towards the use of the burqa. The reactions are in this article interpreted as concerning central values such as open-minded-ness and equality combined with respect for freedom of religion also in public institutions, understood as representing 'the people' as common
