Abstract
This papaer studies a religious marriage norm within the historical context of Muslim-ruled, Christian-ruled and then secular-ruled societies. An outline of challenges to this norm highlights the fact that the public nature of this questioning comes more easily in Tunisia, a Muslim-dominated society, than in a society where Muslims are a demographic minority (West Europe, North America).
