Abstract

The global economic crisis has thrown into sharp relief the strengths and limitations of the U.S. collective bargaining system. This article reviews the immediate challenges facing labor, management and government in the U.S., as well as the longer term implications of the emerging green, global, knowledge-driven economy. Potentially transformative changes in the substance, process and underlying assumptions of U.S. collective bargaining are identified - though the prospects for such transformation are limited.
